Calling all cartoonists, animators, filmmakers, graphic storytellers, screenwriters and writers…
Roland Mann has a BS in Creative Writing from USM and a MA in English from the University of North Alabama. Immediately upon graduating from USM, he began selling stories to comic books. He spent 12 years as a comic book writer and editor, some of that time for Marvel Comics. He has classroom and business experience, and has served as head mentor for the Hemingway Writer's Retreat.
Graphic storytelling involves the visual aspect of storytelling and includes cartoonists, animators, filmmakers, graphic storytellers, screenwriters and writers. This workshop introduces the basics of visual storytelling including the concepts of story flow, point of view, camera angles, risings and falling action, directional flow and other visual storytelling concepts.
Participants do NOT have to be artists to participate in this workshop.
Do you want to be an author? Do you want to create your own hero or villain? This is the workshop for you. The focus is on fantasy but all writers will benefit.
Bryan Davis is the author of the best-selling Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire series, contemporary/fantasy blends for young people. His book, Eye of the Oracle, hit number one on the January 2007, Young Adult CBA best-seller list.
His new trilogy from Zondervan, Echoes from the Edge, debuted in May of 2008 with Beyond the Reflection’s Edge, and the series completed with Nightmare’s Edge in May of 2009. Visit his website at http://www.dragonsinourmidst.com/. Although he is now a full time writer, Bryan was a computer professional for over 20 years.
The youth of today are among the most imaginative people in history. Our goal is to harness that explosive creative energy and channel it into written forms that will blow people away. Uh … not literally, we hope. We will work on everything from nuts-and-bolts crafting to heavy-duty writing theory to hands-on critiquing of conferees’ works in progress. Be ready to learn. Be ready to write.
Bryan will do writing critiques for those who have a story idea or work in progress. Please bring several pages of your work in Microsoft Word format.
Participants will work with Refuge Rangers to build robots that can explore and protect animals and habitats that exist at the refuge. This fun filled track will include robot builds, recycled computer crafts, and "explosive" experiments. Come prepared to get dirty as we work together to save the refuge.
